Artist Statement

Quasi-neoplastic art is the cornerstone of my artistic vision. It is an art form that values abstraction and simplicity. My aim is to create works that play with viewpoint and perspective. Geometric shapes frame my work, forms give structure to materials and colour sustains transformative and sensory qualities.

Previous training as an architectural technician nurtured my technical acuity and passion for materials and minimalism. Also, knowledge and skills honed during this time play an integral role in my process-based practice. 2-D/3-D expanded painting visuals emerge through the exploration and transformation of a variety of materials including but not exclusively timber, artist paper and water-based paint. Modernist and minimalist techniques employed in the work echo the pared-down language of the progressive 20th century artists.

Offering the viewer an opportunity to escape the complexities of contemporary life and reflect on the visual realities visible. These could simply be a line, a shape, a color, and or a surface; elements intended to ‘….induce or intensify the viewers natural desire for contemplation without the benefit of a guiding principle’ [John McLaughlin]. While ubiquitous symbols allude to Kinship; outcomes are designed to kindle reactions that go beyond rational interpretation. Gifting audiences’ freedom of expression.
